Il premio Nobel della fisica a un antinuclerista

HIGGS - Peter Ware Higgs è nato il 29 maggio 1929 a Newcastle upon Tyne, si è specializzato in matematica alla City of London School e si è laureato e dottorato al King’s College di Londra. Dopo aver detenuto la cattedra di fisica teorica all’Università di Edimburgo, dal 1996 è professore emerito. Noto anche per la sua timidezza, da mesi diceva ai suoi collaboratori e a chi lo intervistava quasi di «temere» il Nobel per le ripercussioni sulla sua vita e sui suoi studi. Higgs ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, fra cui la Medaglia Dirac e l’High Energy and Particle Physics Prize della European Physical Society nel 1997, il premio Wolfe nel 2004 e il Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics nel 2010. Il fisico britannico ha in passato ha manifestato attivamente contro l’energia e le armi nucleari ed è stato membro di Greenpeace in una campagna contro gli Ogm.
